Scutum mental

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mental scutum or mental shield , mostly abbreviated as mental, is a scalp of the head of snakes and other scalp crawling animals . It is the unpaired scale in the middle of the tip of the snout, directly below the mouth opening. This means that it faces the rostral of the upper jaw. The lower lip shields or sublabials join along the mouth opening . The front chin shields lie below the mind.

The name Mentale is derived from the term Mentum for the chin. Like all other head shields, their shape, size and training are important determinants within the snake system .
