Metanie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metanie ( ancient Greek μετάνοια metánoia , change of mind, repentance, penance ') denotes a prostration in the tradition of the Orthodox churches . A metany is usually performed when the Jesus prayer is recited . There are two types of metania. In the great metany, the worshiper lies stretched out on the floor. At the little metania the worshiper bows and touches the ground with his hands.

Similar forms of prostration are also used in the Roman Catholic Church . The prostration is common in various liturgies, such as the Good Friday liturgy , the reception of the sacrament of consecration , the making of profession or the reception of the consecration of a virgin . Different religious rites know different forms of Venia , the Cistercians also maintain a bow similar to the small metanie.
