Method 635

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Method 635 is among the creativity techniques a brainwriting technique that promotes a problem-solving process for generating new, unusual ideas in a group of people. It was developed in 1968 by the marketing and management consultant Bernd Rohrbach.

overview

When using method 635, six participants will each receive an equally large sheet of paper. This is divided into 18 boxes with three columns and six lines. Each participant is asked to formulate three ideas (one per column) for a given question in the first line. After a reasonable amount of time - about three to five minutes depending on the degree of difficulty of the problem - each sheet is passed on at the same time, clockwise. The next person should try to take up the ideas already mentioned, to supplement and develop them further.

The name of the method resulted from the optimal six group members, who each produce three initial ideas and then five times develop three initial ideas or ideas derived from them (six participants, three ideas each, pass on five times). Often the "5" in the title of the method is associated with the maximum 5 minutes of processing, but this cannot be read in the original article by the author.

With this method, a maximum of 108 ideas can usually be generated within 30 minutes: 6 participants × 3 ideas × 6 runs.

The rules of brainwriting also apply .

advantages

  • A direct feedback
  • Lots of ideas in a relatively short time
  • Ideas are not talked to death
  • At the same time, a protocol is created about the development of the idea
  • Nobody can "sit back" or dominate the discussion

disadvantage

  • Hardly any opportunity for queries if anything is unclear
  • Difficult to use
  • the rigid process mechanism can disrupt creativity
  • the given work cycle may interfere because it can be too slow for some participants and too fast for others
  • Redundancies, in the worst case only three ideas

application

  • For problem types of low to medium complexity
  • As a follow-up to the brainstorming session to systematically deepen the basic ideas
  • Suitable for exploring the potential of a new raw material, a new process, etc.
