Michael J. Flynn

Michael J. Flynn (born May 20, 1934 in New York City ) is an American electrical engineer. He is a professor emeritus at Stanford University . Flynn is a co-founder of Palyn Associates with Max Paley and chairman of Maxeler Technologies . In 1966 he published the Flynn classification for the subdivision of computer architectures.

Life

Flynn received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College in 1955, his master's degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse University in 1960, and his PhD in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1961 . From 1975 to 1999 he was Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University and from 1976 to 1983 director of the Computer Systems Laboratory at Stanford. From 1991 to 1995 he was director of the NASA- sponsored Center for Aeronautics and Space Information Science at Stanford.

In 2015 Flynn received the Computer Pioneer Award . In 1995 he received the IEEE Harry H. Goode Memorial Award for his achievements in the construction and classification of computer architecture . In 1992 he received the Eckert-Mauchly Award . He is a Fellow of the IEEE (1980), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM, 1994) and the Institution of Engineers of Ireland.

In 1998 he received an honorary doctorate in computer science from the University of Dublin (Trinity College).
