Michael L. Norman

Michael L. Norman (* 1953) is an American astrophysicist and computer scientist.

Norman graduated from Caltech with a bachelor's degree in 1975 and a PhD from the University of California, Davis , in 1980 . He was at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory , the Los Alamos National Laboratory (1984 to 1986), at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (post-doctoral student until 1984) and from 1986 at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (deputy director under Larry Smarr ) and Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before becoming Professor at the University of California, San Diego in 2000 . There he has been director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center and head of the Laboratory for Computational Astrophysics since 2009.

He deals with computer simulations in astrophysics (e.g. formation of the first stars in the universe, astrophysical jets, cosmology) and the numerical methods necessary for this (also for parallel computers).

In 1999 he received the Sidney Fernbach Award and he received a Humboldt Research Award . He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (2001) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2005).
