Michael John Dawson Walker, Baron Walker of Aldringham CMG , GCB , CBE , DL (born July 7, 1944 in Salisbury ) is a Field Marshal in the British Army .

Military career

Walker attended schools in Bulawayo and Bradford . His military career began with attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . In 1966 he was accepted into an infantry regiment , in which he was first second lieutenant and from 1968 a lieutenant . He was stationed in Cyprus for two years before serving in the Northern Ireland conflict. After attending Staff College in Camberley , he was promoted to captain in 1972 and joined the UK Department of Defense . In 1976 he was promoted to major and from 1976 to 1978 was company commander of a unit stationed in Tidworth , Wiltshire . In 1982 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel . Until 1985 he was military assistant to the chief of the general staff. In 1987 he was deployed to Northern Ireland and was mentioned in despatches for his outstanding achievements there . He was promoted directly to brigadier that same year, omitting the rank of colonel . After brief stints in Gibraltar he joined a unit stationed in Sennelager , Germany, which he commanded from 1987 to 1989. This was followed by an appointment as Chief of Staff of the I. Corps until 1991. In 1991 he was promoted to Major General . As commander of the 2nd Infantry Division, he took part in the Second Gulf War. After another promotion to Lieutenant-General in 1994, he became commander of the Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps . In the Balkans he led the Implementation Force before he started working on the General Staff. In 1997 he was promoted to general , from 2000 he was chief of staff and from 2003 chief of defense . In 2006 he retired. From 2006 to 2011, Walker directed the Royal Hospital Chelsea . On December 19, 2006, he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Walker of Aldringham , of Aldringham in the County of Suffolk , and has since been a crossbencher member of the House of Lords . In 2007 he was made the ceremonial office of Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London . In 2014 he was awarded the honorary rank of Field Marshal .
