Microsoft AutoRoute is a route planner for the PC for viewing maps and for automatically creating individual routes with the vehicle. The version for North America ( USA and Canada ) is called Microsoft Streets & Trips .

history

The first version was brought by the British company NextBase Ltd. launched in the late 1980s for DOS-based computers and later ported it to the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows . In 1994 the software was sold to Microsoft and marketed under the names Microsoft Automap Road Atlas and Microsoft Automap Streets . Since 1995 the program has been called Microsoft AutoRoute in Europe .

From version 2000, a basic version with various additions to the name (Express, Standard, most recently Essentials) was part of the Works Suite up to version 2006. The program has achieved its greatest popularity through this distribution channel as an OEM version.

The current program version 2013 can be installed from Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. The 64-bit versions are excluded for Windows XP and Windows Server.

In July 2014 Microsoft announced the discontinuation of development. Support with updates continued until July 2015. The 2013 version is the last and has not been marketed since the beginning of 2015.

Functions

AutoRoute is available in two full versions with or without GPS navigation and supports voice-controlled guidance for mobile Windows computers. In the OEM version, the program is intended for stationary use on the desktop computer without GPS navigation and voice output. However, other online functions are also included via the Internet and web services such as Windows Live Search. Version 2006 is the last version for Windows 98 / Me and version 2007 is the last version for Windows 2000 .

A special feature is the ability to customize the cards with drawing tools.

Maps

It contains maps from 37 European countries. An address search with street names is only available for the most important European countries; only trunk roads are listed for the other countries considered. The map material can remain on the data carrier or be installed at the same time and is a program-supported alternative for online route planners.
