Modifiable off-the-shelf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Modifiable off-the-shelf (abbreviated to MOTS ) refers to a standardized series product ( COTS ) that can be adapted to individual needs, for example through openness of the source code . Accordingly, the product can be tailored to the user by the buyer, seller or other person.

Open source software can be used unchanged as a COTS or as a MOTS product - this is (among other things) a great strength of these programs. This also applies to open hardware .
