Mohana (ethnicity)

The Mohana are a small people on Lake Manchar in Sindh Province in Pakistan .

Way of life

The Mohana live on houseboats on Lake Manchar, the largest lake in Pakistan at over 250 square kilometers. Their traditional livelihood is fishing. The Mohana fishing people have developed some techniques that are specially adapted to their habitat, such as camouflaged hunting using reeds or pelicans placed on their heads .

Natural disasters have decimated the fish population, which is why the Mohana now increasingly catching coots dodge - who are in the Mohana on the menu the only birds.

The training of the Mohana children also includes the imitation of bird calls; if they pass a corresponding test, they are accepted into the group of adults.

Wastewater and pesticides from agriculture pollute Lake Manchar, and persistent droughts are drying it up. Due to this destruction of their most important livelihood, the number of Mohana has already dropped from 60,000 to around 25,000.
