An assembly tower is a mobile construction , usually mounted on rails , on rocket launch pads . It serves to erect the rocket on the launch table or to assemble it if necessary. It is driven away from the rocket a few hours before launch, while a launch tower remains as part of the launch pad until launch. In some cases, the assembly tower also takes on the function of a supply tower .
