A motorcycle stand is a parking stand for motorcycles. Motorcycles, like other single-track or single-axle vehicles, have no stability when stationary. A stand creates a statically determined tripod , so the stability of a parked motorcycle can be ensured. With a few exceptions, a stand is part of the basic equipment of motorcycles.

Side stand

The side stand is a support strut that can be folded out to the side. It is usually arranged between the vehicle's center of gravity and the rear wheel hub. Both tires stay on the ground, the motorcycle is tilted a little and stands on three points together with the stand. The side tilt of the motorcycle is influenced by the length of the stand and the steering angle. Due to the caster angle of the front wheel, the lateral inclination is greater when the handlebar is turned towards the stand, or less when the handlebar is turned to the other side. If the side tilt is too great, the load on the side stand can become too great, so that it can be pressed into the soft ground or bend under certain circumstances. If the side slope is too low, a slight impulse (from a passer-by or a gust of wind) can be enough for the motorcycle to tip over to the other side.

The side stand harbors a certain potential for danger, as it is possible to drive off with the side stand folded out. In a curve, the stand can then stand on the ground and thus raise the rear wheel, which can lead to a fall. For motorcycles, either side stands are now required that automatically fold in when the load is removed - usually with a spring effect, or that cause the ignition to be interrupted as soon as a gear is engaged with the side stand folded out.

Main stand

The motorcycle stands very securely (on the plane) on a two-legged main stand. This stand lifts a wheel in the air. In the case of heavier vehicles, the main stands are equipped with additional equipment that makes jacking up easier. Usually it is a lever arm on which the driver exerts pressure with his foot or stands with his body weight. Some motorcycles have a lever or cable mechanism (e.g. BMW C1 ) or hydraulically extendable main stands.
