MuPAD ( Mu lti P rocessing A lgebra D ata Tool ) is a computer algebra system . Originally developed by the MuPAD research group at the University of Paderborn under the direction of Benno Fuchssteiner, further development has been carried out since 1997 by SciFace Software GmbH & Co. KG, Paderborn in cooperation with the MuPAD research group and partners at other domestic and foreign universities.

With the takeover of the manufacturer SciFace by MathWorks , MuPAD has only been available as part of the Symbolic Math Toolbox for MATLAB since the end of September 2008 .

Earlier versions

Until autumn 2005 the MuPAD Light variant was available free of charge for use in research and teaching. As a consequence of the closure of the AutoMATH institute at the University of Paderborn, where the MuPAD research group was located, MuPAD Light is no longer available, only the paid version MuPAD Pro . The last version developed by SciFace is 4.0.6.

MuPAD Pro offers

The system is operated by entering commands. Often used commands can be reached directly with a mouse click. MuPAD Pro offers a worksheet concept, which makes it possible, comparable to word processing systems , to formulate and calculate mathematical problems in MuPAD Pro, to visualize and document them in the form of embedded 2D / 3D graphics and animations. Previous commands can be changed and executed again. MuPAD Pro worksheets (notebooks) can be recalculated like a calculation scheme at the push of a button.

MuPAD Pro is used in science, schools and in business. The possible applications range from simple term transformations and linear algebra (also using finite fields and other algebraic structures) to linear optimization, differential equations and numerical calculations. To speed up individual partial calculations, MuPAD Pro can be expanded with its own C ++ routines. The connection of Java code is also possible.
