The two-storey building, in the classical style , was built in 1841 by the Donaueschinger Museumsgesellschaft, with financial support from Prince Karl Egon II . In addition to exhibitions, readings, concerts and balls were held here. After a fire in 1845, it was rebuilt two years later. During the First World War , reservists were housed in the building. Then it was used as accommodation for an infantry battalion. After the war, the house was no longer used by the museum society. In the 1930s it was the municipal spa and later a cinema. In 1957 a second cinema was set up. The movie theater was in operation until 2006. The renovation work that began in 2008 was completed the following year. In September 2009 the museum opened with its first exhibition.

Museum concept

The museum focuses on contemporary art and shows three smaller solo exhibitions in parallel to an annually changing group exhibition. With a variety of artistic positions, the Art.Plus Museum offers a varied insight into the contemporary art scene on an international level, but also takes regional art production into account.

The themes of the exhibitions are developed in cooperation with private as well as public art collections. Beyond the fast pace of contemporary art, the Art.Plus Museum with its exhibitions and the coordinated program of events is an attractive place for cultural encounters in the region and beyond.
