Muttapan

Muttapan is a Hindu deity worshiped mainly by underprivileged castes in northern Kerala , although many Hindus go on pilgrimages in southern India to take part in the Teyyam rituals and other castes now also worship this god.

Muttapan is in Theyyam worshiped -Ritualen where costumes worn and sung and danced to by Muttapan invoke . As a result of the Sanskritization process, Muttapan is now also identified with Shiva and Vishnu, since he represents a double deity, Valiya Muttapan and Cheriya Muttapan. Muttapan is considered to be the incarnation of Shiva and Vishnu at the same time.

Muttapan's main job is to protect Adivasi and lower castes from the higher cast landowners.
