Nostrils

Nostrils of a horse

Nostrils refers to the nostrils of horses and other odd ungulates . Since horses can hardly breathe through the mouth due to the very long soft palate , the nostrils are the exclusive access to the airways .

The nostrils are sensitive sensory organs that have many fine hairs, which enable the horses to have a very pronounced sense of touch . The nostrils also play a major role in the horse's contact and communication with other living beings. The swelling of the nostrils of odd-toed ungulates can be caused by exertion and the associated stronger breathing or by excitement or fearfulness.
