Neck heating

In some roadsters and convertibles , neck heaters are installed. Warm air flows from the ventilation nozzles in the headrests, which warm the head and shoulders when the top is open.

Neck heating technology with an at least temporarily open body

The idea of providing a heating system that specifically controls the temperature of a driver's head, neck or shoulder area when driving in a vehicle with an open body and at the same time enables a "convertible breeze" that the driver can perceive, was born on December 24, 1996 Patent pending and granted by the inventor Ludwig Schatzinger.

The neck heating was first offered on the market by Daimler AG under the name Airscarf (dt. Luftschal ) and used in the vehicle model Mercedes SLK . Up to a driving speed of 120 km / h, the hot air distribution adapts to the air turbulence, after which a constant setting is used.

The combination of a fan and a PTC heating element with an output of around 200 watts enabled a very compact heating system.

In May 2016, Daimler AG lost a patent lawsuit for Airscarf and was no longer allowed to deliver vehicles with Airscarf. In the same month, however, an agreement was reached so that the delivery of vehicles with the system is again possible without restriction.

After the neck heating was introduced to the market by Daimler AG, other convertible manufacturers also offered this neck heating. Peugeot calls the offer "Airwave". Neck heating is also available in the Audi A5 Cabrio.
