Naneh Sarma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Naneh Sarma ( Persian ننه سرما, DMG Nane Sarmā , 'Mother Frost') is a figure of Iranian folk culture. She is the wife of Amu Nouruz , the "Uncle Nouruz ".

She carefully prepares for the arrival of Uncle Nouruz, cleans the house, prepares the prison Sin table, makes herself beautiful, but falls asleep while waiting. He approaches her while the flowers bloom on his way, he gives her presents, but he refrains from waking her. When she wakes up he has already gone on again, so that she has to wait another year for his return. Often this story is connected with the prophecy that the world will end if the two really meet.

These legends, which are passed on orally in different forms, are one of the calendar legends in the cycle of the "old woman". Instead of Amu Nouruz, her husband or admirer of the old woman, who is also called Ajuza, Ajuzak, Kampirak, Bibi Nowruzi, Ḵāla Nowruziin, is an old man, hunter or "Ali " . It is typical that an actual meeting is not possible. The cycle of legends on the "old woman " puts an old woman who embodies winter at the center of a wide variety of adventure and hero stories. These stories also exist outside of Iran, for example in England and Ireland. The origin of the legends is assumed to be a nature and fertility goddess similar to Demeter , who has transformed over time into the grotesque image of an old woman who has both positive and negative traits.

In 2012 the first translation of a short story of Iranian folk literature on Little Mother Frost was published in English: Pomegranates and Roses: A Persian Love Story .
