National Museum of Singapore

The National Museum of Singapore is a museum in Singapore .

The museum is the oldest museum in the country. The museum building was erected in 1849. The history of the museum itself also goes back to 1849 when part of the library of the Raffles Institution ( Singapore Institution ) was established in the building. After various relocations of the museum, it was finally housed in the building on Stamford Road in 1887 .

The museum is one of the four national museums in the country, the other three are the two museums of the Asian Civilizations Museum in the Empress Place Building and the Old Tao Nan School as well as the Singapore Art Museum .

The focus is on the history of Singapore. In 1965 the museum was named the National Museum of Singapore . For a brief period between 1993 and 2006, the museum name was the Singapore History Museum . Between 2003 and the end of 2006 the museum was restored and reopened on December 2, 2006.
