NeXus (file format)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NeXus is a data format for scientific applications of neutrons, X-rays and muons. It is not to be confused with the Nexus format in bioinformatics.

The NeXus format was developed in 1994 by scientific employees of several large research institutions and was quickly introduced at some institutions; Neutron scattering data have been generated and archived at the Paul Scherrer Institute in NeXus since the late 1990s . With ever higher primary data rates and the resulting need to switch from ASCII to binary formats, interest in NeXus also increased at other institutes. Worldwide, NeXus is currently the only candidate for a standardized data format on numerous neutron and synchrotron radiation instruments.

The NeXus data model allows storage in various physical formats. It supports XML , HDF4 and HDF5 . In the long term, however, only HDF5 should be supported.
