Life

Nelson Wilbur Fisk was born in Isle La Motte, Vermont. He graduated from Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie , New York and then worked in his family's marble quarry. After the death of his father Hiram Fisk in 1884, he became the sole owner of the company.

Fisk married Elizabeth B. Hubbell of Chazy , New York in 1880. His wife was an expert in weaving and dyeing, and her wall hangings, placemats, and tablecloths were valued by collectors. When she came to Isle La Motte, she founded the Elizabeth Fisk Looms, employing some of the Isle La Motte women. Their fine bed linen was known throughout the country and even in England.

A member of the Vermont Republicans, Fisk was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1883 to 1887 and a member of the Vermont Senate from 1889 to 1891 . In a key legislative role, he was involved in the construction of three bridges, including the first to connect Grand Isle with mainland Vermont at Alburg . He was a trustee of the State Normal School, now Johnson State College , the Vergennes State Industrial School, and the University of Vermont . He was also a delegate to the National Assemblies of Republicans of 1888 and 1892. In 1896 he was elected lieutenant governor of Vermont and held this office from 1897 to 1899.

When the Vice President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt was visiting Fisk in 1901 at the annual meeting of the Vermont Fish and Game League, he received word that President William McKinley had been shot at in Buffalo . Roosevelt was crossed by boat and brought to the President in Buffalo on the Rutland Railroad that night. The Vermont Fish and Game League's annual meeting was attended by Vermont political celebrities and over a thousand guests. These were brought over Lake Champlain by steamers , which docked at the Fisk loading ramp opposite the quarry.

Fisk died in Isle La Motte on October 1, 1923. His grave is in Isle La Motte South Cemetery.

The Fisk quarry on Isle La Motte on West Shore Road is part of the remains of one of the oldest reefs on earth. This reef was formed about 480 to 450 million years ago and extended over a length of 2000 kilometers. Since 2009 the fossil reef has been a national natural monument. The Fisk quarry has been opened to the public.
