Neuromuscular Integrative Action

Neuromuscular Integrative Action , or Nia for short , is a fitness sport.

Nia combines movement elements of the dance techniques jazz dance , modern dance and Duncan dance with elements of the martial arts Tai Chi , Taekwondo and Aikido as well as with elements of yoga , the Feldenkrais method and the Alexander technique . The intensity of the execution of these movements can be selected individually.

By practicing Nia, all major areas of the body are to be trained and body awareness increased. Nia is practiced barefoot and to music.

Similar to martial arts, there are five consecutive belt grades in Nia training. There is the White, Green, Blue, Brown and Black Belt.

Nia was developed in the early 1980s by the then aerobics trainers Debbie and Carlos Rosas and was initially called “Non-Impact Aerobics”.
