Perch Rock Lighthouse

The New Brighton Lighthouse or Perch Rock Lighthouse is a disused lighthouse at the mouth of the River Mersey near New Brighton .

history

The lighthouse stands on Perch Rock , the name of which is derived from perch , a wooden, three-legged tripod on which a lantern was installed in 1683 . Construction of the current tower began in 1827 by Tomkinson & Company. It is a 28 m high white granite tower with a former red lamp and a fog bell, which were in continuous operation from 1830 to 1973. The shape is based on that of the trunk of an oak. Modern navigation devices made it less important. The lighthouse is privately owned.
