The New Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra is a self-governing private orchestra in Korea.

history

It was founded in 1991 by cellist Bong Kim. The name "New Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra" was adopted in 1999. The orchestra has played over 1200 concerts and is considered to be the best private orchestra in Korea. The SPO gives around 80 concerts every year. Thereby it contributes to the popularization of classical music in Korea. The orchestra leader Dang Ahn and the artistic director Dong-Su Chun lead the orchestra. Abdrashev Tolepbergen from Kazakhstan was chief conductor until his death in 2007. The orchestra has not had a permanent conductor since then. Stefano Trasimeni from Italy is currently working as a guest conductor.

Orchestra competition

  • The first competition was held at Seoul Art High School in September 2003.
  • The 2nd: on November 19th, 2004 - Mozart Hall / on November 20th - Beckstein Hall
  • The 3rd: September 24, 2005 - Seoul Art High School / October 1 - DS Hall
  • The 4th: September 22, 2006 - Seoul Art High School / September 30 - DS Hall
  • The 5th: September 18, 2007 - Seoul Art High School / September 15 - World Gloria Center
  • The 6th: on the 19th ~ 20th July 2008 - Seoul Art High School
