Nihon Hidankyō

Nihon Hidankyō ( Japanese 日本 被 団 協 ), also known as the International Confederation of Atomic and Hydrogen Bomb Sufferers , is a Japanese peace organization that campaigns against nuclear armament in the world. Above all, it sees itself as the only national organization for the survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of the Second World War , known as " Hibakusha ". The members come from all Japanese prefectures .

Nidon Hidankyō was founded on August 10, 1956 by Senji Yamaguchi , with the aim of representing the interests of those affected by the atomic bombing. Yamaguchi himself suffered severe radiation burns on August 9, 1945 as a 14-year-old worker in a Mitsubishi arms factory in Nagasaki, which severely disfigured his face.

The goals of the organization include, above all, the use against a nuclear war as well as the destruction of all nuclear weapons and the creation and signing of an international treaty outlawing nuclear weapons. In addition, she demands state compensation for the victims and damage caused by the atomic bombs, justifying this by stating that the state took part in the world war and is therefore responsible for the damage caused by the bombing. Finally, she calls for the protection and support of the Hibakusha, of whom more than 300,000 still live in Japan and many more in Korea and other parts of the world, to be secured.

In 2005, the Nihon Hidankyō and Senji Yamaguchi were among the favorites for the Nobel Peace Prize , but were left empty-handed.
