F17.1 Mental and behavioral disorders from tobacco: Harmful uses
ICD-10 online (WHO version 2019)

Nicotine abuse (from the Latin abusus , abuse) is or was in medical parlance the name for a harmful consumption of tobacco products or the nicotine contained therein . Repeated or prolonged consumption can lead to dependence .

Here, as in other uses of the terms “ use ” and “ abuse ”, an approval or disapproval of the use of a drug is expressed by a person or group using any drug in any way or for any purpose , and another person or group rated as “good” or “bad” for the user himself and / or society. Regarding this assessment, however, no broad agreement can be found, so that the WHO abandoned the term “abuse” in the ICD-10 in favor of the term “harmful use”.

There is a three-way comorbidity between depression (as well as anxiety disorders ) and the increased (harmful) consumption of alcohol and nicotine, whereby smokers with a history of greater severity of depression become more dependent on nicotine.
