Nisus Writer is a word processing program for Macintosh .
Nisus Writer for Classic Mac OS
Nisus Writer was the first word processor for the Macintosh to support WorldScript . Long before Unicode was introduced , it was thus able to mix several writing systems in one text document, i.e. Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, etc., provided the appropriate Apple Language Kit was installed. Nisus Writer was therefore an indispensable tool for users who dealt with ancient languages, such as theologians and archaeologists.
Other unique selling points were multi-part text selection and multiple clipboards, a sound recording function, etc.
The last version is Nisus Writer 6.5; it is still being driven out. It runs under Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2.2 and Mac OS X, but only in the Classic environment on PPC, from Mac OS X 10.5 onwards only under SheepShaver. The international Nisus Writer Dictionaries, which were available on CD, are no longer sold, so that as a buyer of the US version of the Nisus Writer 6.5 you can only check English spelling and, above all, only use English hyphenation.
Nisus made a particularly lean word processing program available with Nisus Writer Compact . It was primarily intended for energy-saving use on Apple's 68K PowerBooks .
Nisus Writer was valued by its users for its reliability and performance not found in other programs. These features made it a popular tool for prolific writers, especially book authors. At the same time, Nisus Writer was always criticized for its very free interpretation of Apple's user interface guidelines.

For Mac OS X, Nisus developed a completely new product, Nisus Writer Express, based on Cocoa , which adheres very closely to Apple's user interface guidelines. It is a very lean word processor with extensive Word compatibility. In 2007, Nisus released another product, Nisus Writer Pro , which expanded the functionality of Nisus Writer Express to include several professional functions, such as the creation of tables of contents and indexes as well as cross-referencing support. The program is based on Nisus Writer Express and therefore has a number of similarities with the latter, both in terms of functionality and user interface.
There are localizations of the program in different languages such as Danish, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish.
