The North German Freight Steamship AG was founded in 1903 by the Flensburger Kohlenhandlung Gebr. Petersen, after they bought the Rocklands steamer from England in 1896 and employed it to transport coal for a partner shipping company .

The North German freight steamship AG of the Flensburger Kohlenhandlung Gebr. Petersen obtained their coal from England and in 1896 acquired the cargo steamer Rocklands, built in 1881 by Irvine's Shipbuilding & Drydock . In 1904 the Schwennau (2250 tdw) from the Neptun shipyard in Rostock and the Königsau (2250 tdw) from the Flensburger Schiffbaugesellschaft followed . Levensau (3350 tdw) was taken over from Tönninger Eiderwerft in 1907 .

1865, the coal trading company is founded

The coal trading company, a joint establishment of Gebr. Petersen and Holm & Molzen in Flensburg in 1865, founded the coal trading company in 1874 , which in 1909 had ordered a self-trimming coal steamer from the Flensburg shipbuilding company. The Glückauf ship (3350 tdw) was delivered in 1910 and looked after by the correspondent owner Gebr. Petersen. Up until the delivery of this special ship, a new type of coal extinguishing system with two cranes was being built on the Flensburg quay, which brought many dock workers out of their jobs. The previous extinguishing work, in which the coal in the hold was shoveled into baskets and handled with on-board dishes, was no longer necessary.

In 1911 the shipping company from Wismar took over the self-trimmer Wismar (3357 tdw) and used it under the same name. However, after two years in the North Sea, it sank in a storm.

Separation 1913

The partner companies separated in 1913 and Holm & Molzen took over Schwennau and Königsau and added them to their fleet. In the same year, the Rocklands was assigned to the Fischer shipping company and renamed Franz Fischer . The Petersen brothers continued to run the North German freight steamship company with the Levensau , which was confiscated in England in 1914 at the start of the First World War.

In 1927 Marquardt Petersen, co-owner of Gebr. Petersen, founded the shipping company Marquardt Petersen GmbH together with J. Thielsen and A. Wandmaker. They ordered two ships from the Flensburger Schiffbaugesellschaft, which were delivered in 1927 as Marquardt Petersen (2620 tdw) and in 1928 as Anna Marquardt Petersen (2625 tdw). The following difficult years of the economy led to falling freight rates and in 1932 Anna Marquardt Petersen was sold to Ozean Dampfer AG, Flensburg, correspondent shipper Heinrich Schuldt and renamed Heinrich Schuldt . The other steamer was sold in 1936 to the Flensburger Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft from 1869, renamed Sexta and the shipping company closed. In 1980 the coal business was also deleted from the commercial register.
