The Northwest League of Professional Baseball (or just Northwest League or NWL ) is a small Class A short season league in the northwestern United States and western Canada . The NWL season begins in mid-June and ends at the beginning of September. All eight teams are associated with a major league team .
The Northwest League has existed in various forms since 1890 and has been in its current form since 1955. Today's NWL is the descendant of the Western International League (WIL), a Class B league from 1937 to 1951 (with interruptions during World War II) and Class A from 1952 to 1954. The league reformed to become the Northwest League and fell into the 1955 season in Class B.
Last season the WIL had ten teams, four of them in Canada. The six US cities plus Eugene were the seven founding teams of the Northwest League in 1955. During the fiftieth season in 2004, five of the seven original cities were in the league. The Northwest League switched to a short season schedule in 1966.
