Nusratiye Mosque

The Nusratiye Mosque ( Turkish Nusratiye Camii ), formerly the Maronite Church ( Maruni Kilisesi ), is a historic Maronite Catholic church from the 1870s in the southern Turkish city of Mersin, which has been converted into a mosque .

The church was built in 1876 by Christian Maronites from Lebanon and Syria opposite the Protestant church. In the 1950s, however, the priest died of a lightning strike, which is why the Maronite community had to travel to Lebanon for a new community leader. However, according to Mustafa Erim, it was realized that the Maronite community of 300 people was too small to be able to maintain a priest, which is why they returned without a new head. The church was handed over to the state on the condition that the building should serve religious purposes, and the church bell was installed in the Roman Catholic Saint Anthony Church , where the Maronites in the city from now on also held their services. By 1971 only 150 Maronites lived in the city.

The building type of the Maronite Church was a parish church with a nave and two aisles. The basic plan was rectangular. In 1985 the building was converted into a mosque and in 1986 an apartment for the Imam was added to the upper floor. A vestibule ( son cemaat yeri ) and toilets were added to the north facade, and a doorway was converted into a mihrab .
