The Owner-Free File System , shortly offsystem or OFF , is an open-source - file sharing program for storing and retrieving digital data in a P2P network.

The system ensures the credible deniability of a certain data exchange by its users, which is sometimes desired because in networks such as e. B. Gnutella and Gnutella2, FastTrack, Kazaa, eDonkey, BitTorrent users are now more frequently the target of law enforcement and civil claims.

concept

All files in the OFF network are stored in randomized data blocks. Each offered file is divided into several individual parts (blocks) on its own hard drive before it is uploaded and then mixed with the blocks of other files that have nothing to do with the actual file. This is done via an XOR link and ensures that the blocks are made unrecognizable. At this point it is no longer possible to see which block belongs to which files previously inserted.

Each participant of the OFF network releases a certain amount of hard disk space as required, on which the individual mixed files are then stored distributed in the form of blocks, which, however, do not have the content of the files as plain text, as they were previously via the above-mentioned XOR -Linked with other randomly chosen blocks. You do not save the files of others or the stored original file on your node, but only unrelated blocks. This is what constitutes anonymity.

To be able to download a file, you need a key, which is assigned in the form of a URL. The client then loads distributed blocks from the basket memory (English: "Bucket") of the selected nodes and reassembles them into a complete file. Because the small parts are ambiguous and arise as a combination of several files or small parts, it is not possible to draw any conclusions from the existing stored data to the original files.

The only element that allows mapping is the URL of the uploaded files. However, these are completely optional ("protected") due to the provision of the keys via the search. It just needs to be the URLs through other channels such as B. RetroShare can be exchanged anonymously.

The Owner Free Filesystem pursues the same goal as the Freenet project, but is easier to use with optimized speed and therefore as fast as BitTorrent or eMule .

It appears that the OFF system is e.g. Currently no longer being developed. The last release is on January 28th, 2010. In the meantime, all "start nodes" are offline and the client can no longer find any other nodes.
