OSM (mines)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mines of the OSM series, or OZM ( Cyrillic : ОЗМ (осколочно-заградительная мина)) (unofficially: frog mine) are jumping mines with splintering action from the genus of anti-personnel mines that were developed in the former Soviet Union . In the Soviet army, then in the armies of the post-Soviet states, they were nicknamed Minе Frog or Witch .

Description and function

from left: OSM-3, OSM-4 and OSM-72

The OSM mines have a cylindrical steel body with two openings on the top of the mine. The central opening is used to accommodate the detonator, the off-center opening to accommodate the detonator. They are triggered by trip wire / tension wire or, alternatively, triggered electrically by hand. The OSM-4 and the OSM-72 work on the same principle. If a pull of 10 to 50 N is exerted on the trigger wire, a cotter pin is pulled out of the detonator. This releases the preloaded firing pin, which strikes the primer and ignites a propellant that burns down to the bottom of the mine and initiates an ejection charge there, whereby the mine body is separated from the lower part of the mine and thrown into the air. The mine cup remains connected to the mine body by an approx. 50 cm long wire that is hooked into a pretensioned firing pin on the mine body. When the trigger level is reached, the wire tensions and releases the firing pin, causing it to hit the detonator, which in turn ignites the active charge.

The OSM-3 is triggered and thrown into the air in the same way as the other two models, but does not remain attached to the base plate with a wire, but ignites the active charge by means of a delay set, similar to that of a hand grenade.

  • Diameter: 7.5 cm
  • Explosives: 75 grams of TNT
  • Triggering: trip wire / tension wire or electrically by hand
  • Special features: Smallest model in the OSM series, central wing screw, permanently installed protruding ignition cables
  • Igniter: MUV or MUV-2, optionally electric glow igniter

OSM-4

  • Height: 14.5 cm
  • Diameter: 9 cm
  • Explosives: 170 grams of TNT
  • Trigger: trip wire / tension wire
  • Special features: Rounded mine top
  • Detonators: MUV to MUV-4

OSM-72

  • Height: 17 cm
  • Diameter: 9.6 cm
  • Explosives: 500 grams of TNT
  • Triggering: trip wire / tension wire or electrically by hand
  • Special features: Largest model in the OSM series, slightly offset edge on the upper part of the mine
  • Igniter: MUV to MUV-4, optional electric glow igniter
