In 1854 the Compagnie de l'Ouest Suisse ( OS ) procured 5 type B 2/3 steam locomotives with a tender , which were designed as mixed train locomotives . They were supplied by the St. Léonard machine factory near Liège (Belgium).

Not a lot of data has survived; all information on control, boiler and output is missing. Even with numbers and names, not everything is clear. Since the second machine delivery ( OS B 2/3 (Karlsruhe) ) began with the number 6, it can be assumed that they were numbered 1–5 when they were delivered. The fact that they are said to have been renumbered around 1858 can be traced back to the numbering in OS D 3/3 . No OS document could be used for the naming, this information comes from newspaper reports.

It was the first series of this type of machine on the OS, for the other locomotives of this type see B 2/3 .

Technical

Only the outer and chassis dimensions have been retained. Image documents have been used for the remaining information. Since these are often engravings and drawings, mistakes are very possible.

The machine was one of the Stephensons long boiler type. It had an inner frame and an external engine. This acted on the first coupled axle. The locomotive had neither a driver's cab nor any other weather protection. There were 2 domes on the boiler, presumably a sand and a steam dome each. The center of the boiler was 1720 mm above the top of the rail. The fire box was located between the two coupling axles. The two-axle tender with an outer frame had a handbrake that worked on both wheels.
