Obligation ( lat. Obligare , tie ',' commit ') stands for:


obligatory (in the sense of “prescribed”) in music

  • Obligatory voice : the voice must not be left out (contrast: ad libitum )
  • Mandatory instrumentation : The intended instrument may not be replaced by another
  • Compulsory Accompagnement : The accompaniment is composed as an independent voice / or the instruments are prescribed


obligatory (in the sense of “without exception”) in biology and medicine

  • Obligate anaerobes : living beings that can only grow anaerobically (without oxygen)
  • Compulsory parasites , as opposed to facultative ones, are dependent on the host
  • Mandatory migratory birds always take part in the migration
