Opera Nomadi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Opera Nomadi is an Italian interest group for the legal and social equality of the Roma and other travelers.

Opera Nomadi was founded in Bolzano in 1963 as a regional organization for Trentino and South Tyrol and expanded into a national organization in 1965. In 1970 she received the status of Ente Morale Nazionale. It has its seat in Rome and decentralized offices of its subdivisions in different parts of the country. She sees her task in strengthening social solidarity and in protecting the rights of the Roma and Camminanti (non-Roma travelers) “at all levels”.

It is not a self-organization of Roma and / or Camminanti, anyone can join. It sees itself as a cultural mediator between the minority groups and the majority society and in this sense works together with schools and other public institutions.

The organization publishes the online newspaper Romano Lil.

After a large number of south- east European Roma migrants came to Italy in recent years and were exposed to attacks in politics, the media and the majority population, including physical violence, the organization criticized the indifference of the Italian civilian population and a lack of moral courage in 2008 .
