A pusher in action

Oshiya ( Japanese 押 し 屋 , literally: pusher ) is a slang term in Japanese for staff who can be found in Tokyo subway stations at rush hour and whose task is to push passengers into the overcrowded cars from outside so that the doors open the car can be closed and the passenger switching times can be kept as short as possible.

function

The original official name was Ryokyaku seiri gakari ( 旅客 整理 係 ), meaning passenger order personnel . The Oshiya's duties are sometimes done by station staff. Often, however, they are also specially hired part-time workers.

In addition to actually pushing passengers into the trains, their main tasks are to carry out security checks on passengers and when trains enter and leave, as well as at train stations where large numbers of passengers tend to get on a few cars and redistribute them .
