Osu (greeting)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Osu or Ossu ( Japanese. 押 忍 ) describes a Japanese greeting that is mainly used in karate , kendō , judo and other types of budō .

In Japanese it consists of two characters. The first is osu , which affects the pronunciation of the whole word and literally means "push, push". The second sign shinobu has the meaning of "to endure, to suffer, to suffer". Originally it was an abbreviation from onegaishimasu ("please") and the spelling with these characters was formed separately from it.

Its meaning was expanded as a general greeting and also as a confirmation word in the sense of "yes" or "I understood", here as an alternative to hai .
