otelo ( own spelling OTELO ) is a mobile phone brand of Vodafone GmbH.

history

The brand o.tel.o (with two dots) originally belonged in its earlier form to the no longer existing telecommunications company of the same name, O.tel.o communications , which was merged into Arcor in 1999 . The trademark rights were then transferred to Vodafone via Arcor. Since 2010, OTELO has stood for Vodafone's offer of low-priced mobile phone tariffs and associated smartphones. Arcor used the brand again from December 2006 to January 2008 and temporarily operated an online shop under the name o.tel.o. In 2008 Arcor was taken over with the trademark rights to o.tel.o, which they did not initially use. Only in 2010 did a revival take place after a two-year break. Since then, Vodafone has been offering various mobile phone tariffs as a so-called discounter. There are also SIM cards, surf sticks and routers.

In 2012 the brand was redesigned: The dots disappeared from the name and the logo was graphically changed. This was preceded by the fact that the Unilever Group had given up its detergent brand Otelo, which had also been protected since 1985, in 2005.

From 2012 to 2014 the soccer player Günter Netzer was seen on television for Otelo. Günter Netzer supposedly parted ways with his cult hairstyle in a first commercial and apparently had his bald head cut. In 2013 there was another follow-up spot with Netzer under the motto: “Netzer has the best network.” In 2014, a total of five commercials were shot under the motto “Better net everywhere than Netzer”. Günter Netzer is shown in bizarre situations, e.g. B. when grilling in the hairdressing salon.
