Owens Lake
The Owens Lake is a large, mostly dry lake in US -Bundesstaat California .
geography
The lake is located in the southeast Owens Valley and is about five miles south of the village of Lone Pine . To the east is the small town of Keeler .
history
For a long time, the lake formed a lake trio with Searles Lake and China Lake . The former freshwater lake was fed by water from the Owens River until around 1924 . The dehydration that followed was caused by the drainage of water into the Los Angeles Aqueduct for the drinking water supply of the greater Los Angeles area , which began in 1913 . The dry surface of the lake caused such a high level of dust pollution in the surrounding region that in the 1990s the Environmental Protection Agency forced the lake floor to be re-watered to the extent that a vegetation cover forms that stops wind erosion. Since 2001, 5% residual water has remained in the river bed and is sprayed in the area of Owens Lake. The rest of the water also comes from groundwater deposits, smaller springs or is seepage water. The lake is now salty, which has caused a change in living conditions. From space, you can see large red areas on the area of the lake, which are due to archaea that specialize in salt environments.
