The Oyashio class ( Japanese や し お 型 潜水 艦 , Oyashio-gata Sensuikan ) is a class of eleven conventional hunting submarines of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF). She is the second grade with that name in the JMSDF . Its name predecessor was a single ship , which was the first submarine in Japan built after the Second World War .

General

The boats of the Oyashio class put into service from 1998 to 2008 are an enlarged version of the previous Harushio class and replaced the boats of the Yūshio class . The enlargement was made to create space for a side antenna sonar (FAS - Flankarray Sonar) .

Since March 2015 and February 2017, the two oldest boats ( Oyashio and Michishio ) have been used as school submarines. In the future, the class, like the Harushio class, will be partially replaced by the subsequent Sōryū class .
