The PVK Olymp Prague ( Czech Policejní volejbalový klub Olymp Praha ) is a volleyball club from Prague founded in 1957 under the name Rudá Hvězda Praha , which is best known for its women's team. Today the club plays in the volleyball extra league and has won it four times so far.

history

The club was founded in 1957 as Rudá Hvězda Praha (Red Star Prague) and celebrated its first major success with the Czechoslovak men's championship title in 1966. In the 1970s and 1980s, the women's team dominated the first division of Czechoslovakia and won their championship a total of twelve times.

The men's team was particularly successful in the 1980s, when it became champions seven times between 1982 and 1992. In 1990 the club was renamed Policejní volejbalový klub Olymp Praha and has been a police sports club ever since, cooperating with the Czech Ministry of the Interior. In 1993 the men's team was dissolved.

1997 and 1999 the women's team again reached the championship in the extra league. This was followed by a long time without a championship title, before Sokol Frydek-Mistek was defeated 3-0 in the final in 2005 and thus another championship title was achieved. In 2008 the women were again Czech champions.

Due to the national successes, the women's team often played internationally and was able to win the highest European club competition, the European Cup , twice - in 1976 and 1980. In 1979, the women's team also won the European Cup Winners' Cup . In the 2000/01 season the team reached the quarter-finals of the Top Team Cup .
