Paddy Murphy is an Irish folk rock band from Austria, founded in 2008 .

history

After playing traditional Irish and Scottish music as the bassist of the Medley Folkband for almost 30 years, Franz Höfler founded the band in autumn 2008 with the aim of combining traditional folk music with the power and speed of a rock band. He no longer saw himself in the new band as a bass player, but in the role of the lead singer and front man who shapes the sound with the acoustic instruments banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar and harmonica.

Hermann Hartl (violin), with whom Höfler had already played for several years, as well as Ingolf Wolfsegger (bass), Andreas Schachermayr (drums) and Christoph Niederhuber (electric guitar) completed the lineup. The band's first appearance took place in November 2009. Since then the band has been touring Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland and has performed at international festivals such as the Tollwood Festival in Munich, the Triskell Festival Trieste, the San Patrizio Festival Milano and the Irlanda in Festa at the Gran Teatro Geox in Padua .

In 2011 the band released their first EP entitled Whiskey Before Breakfast . There are four tracks on it, which consist of three processed traditionals and one instrumental piece. In 2012 the debut album Dog's Dinner, produced by Reinhard “Bux” Brunner, was released on ATS Records, where Paddy Murphy has been under contract ever since. The album contains 16 tracks, including three original compositions. In 2014, drummer Andreas Schachermayr left the band. From February 2014 to March 2015, Alexander Hewlett was the new man on drums.

In 2014 the second album Coffin Ship was released . Of the thirteen tracks on the album, nine are original compositions.

In 2015 there was another line-up on drums. Andy Schechinger has been the band's drummer ever since. At the end of 2015, electric guitarist Christoph Niederhuber left the band. Oliver Loy followed him as a new band member.

style

The music style is described by the band itself as "Irish-Speed-Folk-Rock" and is a mixture of traditional Irish music and rock or punk grooves. Both original compositions and newly arranged traditional Irish songs as well as newly processed or processed traditional instrumental pieces, so-called jigs and reels, are played .
