overview

The central area of the building houses the circular ice rink, which is surrounded by boxes and rooms for parties and meetings. The cooling system was housed in the basement, on the first floor there was a balcony, a café and an organ. The building has a domed roof with a large skylight that provided natural light on the ice rink below.

As the popularity of ice skating declined and the Tango Argentino became socially accepted, the Palais de Glace was converted into a dance hall. Many well-known tango orchestras and dancers performed here, but by the late 1920s the building gradually fell into disrepair and in 1931 it was placed under the Ministry of Education and Justice.

The building was then used as the Dirección Nacional de Bellas Artes and from 1932 to 1954 the annual Salón Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Exhibition of Fine Arts) was held here. For this purpose, the palace was rebuilt in 1931 by Alejandro Bustillo, and in 1934 three large wall paintings were created inside. In 1935 the facade was also modernized.

Between 1954 and 1960 the building was used as a studio by the Canal 7 television station. Various exhibitions and concerts have been held here since 1960, including the Salón Nacional.
