Pallet ship

A pallet ship is a cargo ship that is specially designed to load the cargo on pallets through doors in the hull. The pallets are brought to a platform at the door of the ship with forklifts and transported onward by other forklifts in the hold of the ship. The pallets are not Euro pallets, but so-called port pallets.

In the most favorable form, the load is loaded onto the pallet at the factory and securely fixed there and transported to the port by truck or train. There, the pallet loads are grouped in a transit shed according to ship capacities and destinations, and then loaded onto the ship with forklifts. The transfer from the bank to the ship takes place via the side doors and between the decks with lifts. In all phases of operation, the load remains strapped to the pallet while it is handled with a forklift. Even if the entire load is not palletized in the factory, it is possible to introduce the load into the flow of goods at any point in the system, for example in the warehouse of a freight forwarder or even in the transit shed.

As a variant of the pallet ship, the so-called Pallet Shuttle Barges Zulu 01 and Zulu 02 are to be seen, which are used in the field of Dutch inland shipping and where the pallets are not driven in the hold, but on the deck of the specially equipped ships.
