The Odos Panepistimiou ( Greek Οδός Πανεπιστημίου , University Street ') is a boulevard in the center of the Greek capital Athens . It runs from Syntagma Square in a north-westerly direction to Omonia Square and is named after the University of Athens located there. Today in the Propylaea it uses a rectorate building with a ceremonial hall in the middle of the classical building ensemble of the Athens Trilogy , which identified this section of the boulevard as the spiritual center of Greece until the 20th century.

Since 1980 the street has been officially named Leoforos Elefteriou Venizelou (Λεωφόρος Ελευθερίου Βενιζέλου 'Eleftherios-Venizelos-Avenue') in memory of the former Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos , but the name Panepistimiou dominates in common parlance .

Location and important buildings

The 1,200-meter-long boulevard, together with the parallel Stadiou Street, separates the Exarchia and Kolonaki districts to the northeast from the adjacent old town of Plaka to the southwest . To the south, beyond Syntagma Square , the street turns into Vassilis Amalias Avenue.

Next to the Athens trilogy is the Catholic Cathedral of St. Dionysios designed by Leo von Klenze , and the former eye clinic designed by Theophil Hansen. Opposite it is the seat of the Bank of Greece , a late classicist building.
