Panning is a GUI function and means moving an image section. It is mostly used in geographic information systems to move the map section and thus to navigate the map. In addition to zooming and transitions between images, panning is an essential part of the animation of images known as the Ken Burns effect .

As cursor - Symbol a hand is often used with outstretched fingers shortened fingers when pressing down the mouse button, as if the hand is accessing. The map is then moved with the pressed mouse button.

Technically, with this drag & drop, the map is reloaded in the background, which gives the impression of a delay-free move process.
