Paradata

In Para data is data that incidentally occur in a survey of a person. The Greek prefix “Para-” stands for “ with…” and “next to…” .

In social science surveys, the term paradata was established around 2009 and denotes collected data that also accrues if a respondent does not participate. Paradata can also be stratification features known in advance .

In a CATI survey, B. be: speaking speed, interview time, number of contacts, interviewer characteristics.

In the case of a face-to-face interview , this includes E.g .: condition of the building, residential area, household size.

In the case of a computer-aided survey (CAPI), this includes the measured response behavior of a respondent, such as B. the keystrokes or the time between two mouse clicks .

The Paradaten offer researchers on the one hand the opportunity to better compensate for the bias in the sample (e.g. through responsive design ). B. to improve computer-aided surveys and also further analyzes such as B. Perform implicit association tests (IAT).
