Parti pour la democratie et le progrès / Parti socialiste

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Parti pour la démocratie et le progrès / Parti socialiste (PDP / PS) is a party from the West African state of Burkina Faso .

The PDP / PS was founded in 1994 by Joseph Ki-Zerbo , who presided over it until 2005. Ali Lankoandé has been party leader since 2005 .

development

At the national level, the PDP / PS was an important opposition party in the 1990s. In the parliamentary elections in 2002 it was the third largest party with a share of 7.5% of the vote and held ten out of 111 seats in the Burkinabe parliament in the 2002-2007 legislative period.

In the 2005 presidential elections, the PDP / PS candidate, Ali Lankoandé, achieved 1.74% of the vote (which was disappointing for the PDP / PS) and thus ended up in 6th place.

With the death of Ki-Zerbo in December 2006, the PDP / PS not only lost its former party leader. Ki-Zerbo, who resigned from office as party president in 2005, was a personality who shaped Burkinabe politics for decades and the PDP / PS was more than just a figurehead. On the one hand, he guaranteed a social democratic opposition policy of integrity; on the other hand, other party members stood in his shadow for a long time. This configuration resulted in a generation conflict, the end of which is not yet in sight. The 2007 parliamentary elections were thus a - unsuccessful - test for the PDP / PS: The PDP / PS was only able to hold two of its seats in parliament.

ideology

The PDP / PS is a social democratic or democratic-socialist party and belongs to the Socialist International .
