Partido Popular Democrático
Popular Democratic Party ( PDP ) (Spanish: Partido Popular Democrático ( PPD ), German for "Democratic People's Party") is a Puerto Rican party.
The PPD is committed to maintaining the status of Puerto Rico as an extra-territorial area of the USA and wants to achieve greater self-government. The party was founded on July 22, 1938 by former members of the Puerto Rican Liberal Party and the Unionist Party . The founders described the party as center-left. It now sees itself as a centrist party. It was initially led by Luis Muñoz Marín , the first democratically elected governor, and is considered by many citizens as a pioneer of modern Puerto Rico.
Other governors appointed by the PPD were Roberto Sánchez Vilella , Rafael Hernández Colón , Sila María Calderón , Aníbal Acevedo Vilá and Alejandro García Padilla .
