PeaZip is an open source , cross-platform and portable packing program .

The source code is mainly written in Free Pascal using Lazarus ; The program is released under the LGPL for Windows and Linux as an installation package (Windows Installer, DEB , RPM , Slackware .tgz) and as a portable package that does not have to be installed and does not change the system.

PeaZip has its own archive format, PEA, which supports compression, splitting across archives, and flexible schemes for certified encryption and integrity checking, and other widely used formats with a special focus on open formats like 7z and PAQ .

use

PeaZip allows you to search archives in navigation or quick mode, applying various include and exclude filters to the archives and compressing or extracting multiple archives at once.

While specifying the objects to be compressed, PeaZip can also restore and edit the layout of the archive, and fine-tune compression and encryption for supported formats.

The standard output path can be specified for both packing and unpacking. However, this can be overwritten for a single session or a single process.

For both packing and unpacking, the job definition can be saved as a command line (for learning or scripting purposes). By having a detailed log of the process, this helps the user build a bridge between the GUI and the console in order to combine the best of both.

PeaZip can also be used to split / merge archives to varying degrees, compress executable files with strip / UPX, and generate random passwords and key files.

The most frequently used functions of the program are also available in the send to or context menu (Windows) or as .desktop files for context menus (Linux versions). The user interface can be customized in terms of transparency, some colors and icons.

Details

PeaZip also serves as a graphical front end for the following open source or freeware programs:

  • Pea program (graphic) by the same author;
  • Igor Pavlov's 7-Zip and myspaces POSIX -Port from 7z on Linux;
  • PAQ 8, LPAQ, ZPAQ : Matt Mahoney (Bill Pettis PAQ8JD);
  • Ilia Muraviev's QUAD, BALZ, BCM
  • GNU Strip and UPX
  • UNACEV2.DLL 2.6.0.0 (toll-free UNACEV2.DLL license) and UNACE for Linux (toll-free UNACE for Linux license), Marcel Lemke, ACE Compression Software.

Most of these tools can be operated both in console mode and via a graphical user interface, which offers user-friendly editing of the output information.

At the current stage of development of the project, however, there are also some criticisms of the program, including:

  • UTF8 is not fully supported by the GUI.
  • In contrast to other, similar archiving programs, the program does not support drag and drop . Drag and drop into the program is possible from version 1.10.
  • The graphical user interface is slightly delayed in response to user input, and the console window's progress bar is much more reliable than the graphical wrapper's progress bar.
