Pedro Juan Caballero is a city with about 120,000 (as of 2019) inhabitants in northeast Paraguay on the border with Mato Grosso do Sul , Brazil , directly across from Ponta Porã . It is the capital of the Amambay department . Pedro Juan Caballero was founded in 1893. The eponymous politician (1786-1821) was one of the leaders of the Paraguayan independence movement.

economy

The city is primarily a commercial and shopping center, known in Brazil for cheap alcohol and consumer goods, as well as a center for drug trafficking and smuggling of counterfeit textiles and electronics. In Pedro Juan Caballero there is one of the most famous shopping centers in Paraguay, China Shopping. The Aeropuerto Doctor Fuster airfield is located near Pedro Juan Caballero. The city is at the end of the national route Ruta 5 , which comes from Concepción .

crime

In March 2017, fatal violent crimes increased. In particular, Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV) face each other there. These are two of the largest Brazilian organized crime groups targeting cocaine and marijuana. Former Interior Minister Rafael Filizzola said that Pedro Juan Caballero is one of the cities in the region and possibly even worldwide with the highest rate of violent crime. There are currently around 80 murders per 100,000 inhabitants there annually.

The mayor of Pedro Juan Caballero has been José Carlos Acevedo of the Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA) since 2006 .

Sports

The Independiente Futbol Club has played in Pedro Juan Caballero since 1940. His stadium is called La Caldera del Diablo.
